Nucleus

Imagine that a cell is like a tiny factory. The nucleus is its control center, like the boss’s office!

  • It contains all the instructions (DNA) the cell needs to function and grow.
  • The nucleus sends out messages (using RNA) to direct the rest of the cell’s activities.

Etymology (Where does the word come from?)

“Nucleus” comes from the Latin word meaning “kernel” or “little nut.” Think of it like the core, or the central part of something. This makes sense because the nucleus is usually at the center of a cell, like the pit inside a peach!

Let’s think about other uses of “nucleus”:

  • The nucleus of an atom – the central part of the smallest unit of matter.
  • The nucleus of a city – the central and often the oldest part of town.

In all cases, “nucleus” refers to the central and most important part of something.
