Abnormally

What does “abnormally” mean?”Abnormally” means something is different from what’s usual, regular, or expected. It’s like something is out of the ordinary.

Imagine you have a line of evenly spaced trees. If one tree is much taller or shorter than the others, it would look “abnormally” tall or short.

Here’s another way to think about it:

Your pet cat usually sleeps on the couch in the afternoon. If you find it climbing the curtains instead, that would be “abnormally” energetic behavior for your cat.

Etymology (Word Origins)

  • “Abnormally” combines two parts:
  • “Abnormal” – which comes from the Latin words “ab-” meaning “away from” and “norma” meaning “rule” or “pattern.”
  • “-ly” – is an adverb suffix that means “in a way that is.”
  • So, literally, “abnormally” translates to “in a way that is away from the rule or pattern.”

Here are some additional points to remember:

  • “Abnormally” can be used with things that are good or bad. For example, you could say “an abnormally high test score” or “an abnormally cold day.”
  • There are other words that have similar meanings to “abnormally,” like “unusually,” “irregularly,” or “oddly.”
