Atom

Atoms are the tiny building blocks that make up everything in the universe. They are the smallest unit of matter that still retains the properties of a specific chemical element.

Think of it like this:

  • Everything is made of matter, and matter is made of atoms.
  • Atoms are like super small LEGO® bricks used to build everything around you—from a chair to a tree, even yourself!

Examples of atoms:

  • Hydrogen atom (the simplest atom)
  • Carbon atom (found in all living things)
  • Oxygen atom (part of the air we breathe)
  • Gold atom (creates the shiny metal)

Etymology:

The word “atom” comes from the Greek word “atomos,” meaning “indivisible.” Ancient thinkers believed atoms were the smallest things that couldn’t be broken down further. (We now know atoms are made up of even smaller particles!)
