Organic Populations

Think of it like groups of living things:

  • Population: A group of the same kind of animal or plant living in the same area. Like a bunch of squirrels in a park, or a field of sunflowers.
  • Organic means they are natural, living things (not robots or plastic stuff!).

Examples of organic populations:

  • A school of fish in a lake
  • A colony of ants in your backyard
  • All the trees in a forest
  • Even a herd of cows on a farm

Word Breakdown (Etymology)

  • “Organic” comes from the Greek word “organikos,” which is related to the word “organ” (a part of a living thing).
  • “Population” comes from the Latin word “populus,” meaning “people.” We use it for groups of all living things, not just people!
